1. Overview

Red Boot's Spelling Adventure ("the App") is a children's educational spelling game designed for use by children ages 5-12 under the supervision of a parent or guardian. The App is published by Swain Educational Systems, a DBA of Swain Management LLC. We are committed to protecting the privacy of our users, especially children.

This App complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), the Google Play Families Policy, and applicable state laws including Texas SB 2420 and similar age verification regulations in Utah and Louisiana.

2. Information We Collect

The App stores the following information locally on your device:

• Child's first name (optional, used only for personalized in-app greetings — never transmitted to our servers)
• Grade level (optional, used to tailor difficulty)
• Spelling word lists entered manually or captured via photo
• Practice session scores and learning progress
• Achievements, badges, and treasure counts
• Audio and display preferences

The following information is sent to our servers solely for the purposes described:

• Google Play purchase tokens and subscription status — sent to our backend so we can verify the purchase with Google Play and unlock premium features. We do not link this to any personal account or contact information.

We do NOT collect:

• Email addresses (we have no account system)
• Real names or contact information
• Location data
• Device identifiers for tracking or advertising
• Behavioral data for advertising
• Photos beyond what is needed for OCR processing (see Section 4)

3. How We Use Your Information

The information collected is used solely to:

• Provide personalized spelling practice and feedback
• Track learning progress and display it on the parent dashboard
• Award achievements and treasures based on practice performance
• Remember user preferences between sessions
• Process subscription purchases through Google Play Billing

4. Photo Capture (OCR Feature)

The photo capture feature is intended to be used by a parent or guardian. By using this feature, the parent or guardian consents to the photo being transmitted to a third-party service (Google) for text recognition. When this feature is used:

• The photo is temporarily transmitted to Google's Gemini API for text recognition (OCR processing)
• Only the extracted text (spelling words) is returned to the App
• The photo is NOT stored on our servers
• Google processes the image under Google's own privacy terms — please review those terms for details on Google's handling of submitted images
• We never use the photo for any purpose other than extracting the spelling words

5. Payments and Subscriptions

All purchases and subscriptions are processed entirely through the Google Play Store using Google Play Billing. We do NOT collect, store, or have access to any payment information such as credit card numbers, billing details, or transaction data.

Subscriptions provide ongoing access to spelling practice features, photo word list uploads, parent dashboard analytics, and educational content updates throughout the active subscription period.

Auto-renewal: Subscriptions purchased through the App auto-renew at the end of each billing period (monthly or yearly, depending on the plan selected) until canceled. You can view, manage, or cancel your subscription at any time in your Google Play account settings (Play Store → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; no partial refunds are issued for unused time.

6. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)

This App is designed for use by children under parent or guardian supervision and complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Google Play Families Policy.

• We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children
• The child's first name is optional, stored only on the device, and never transmitted to any server
• We do not display advertisements
• We do not use third-party advertising networks
• We do not use analytics services that track children
• Subscription decisions are gated behind a Parental Gate (math problem) to prevent children from making purchases
• We do not sell, share, or transmit children's data to third parties

If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child, please contact us immediately at the email below and we will delete it.

7. Third-Party Services

The App uses the following third-party services:

• Google Play Billing — for subscription processing
• Google Gemini API — for OCR (photo-to-text) processing only (see Section 4)
• Google Play Services — for app distribution and updates

We do NOT use:

• Advertising networks
• Analytics services that track users
• Social media integrations
• Behavioral tracking services

8. Data Storage and Security

All App data is stored locally on your device using standard secure device storage. Clearing the App's data or uninstalling the App will permanently remove all stored information. We recommend parents periodically review the data stored within the App via the Parent Dashboard.

9. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• View all data the App has stored (accessible within the Parent Dashboard)
• Delete all stored data at any time by clearing the App's data in Android Settings, or by using the "Clear Words" option in the App
• Request information about what data is stored by contacting us
• Cancel your subscription at any time through your Google Play account settings

10. App Permissions

The App may request the following Android permissions:

• Camera — used only for the photo capture (OCR) feature; access is requested at the time of use
• Storage — used to save photos temporarily before OCR processing; no images are retained
• Internet — required for OCR processing and subscription verification

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected within the App with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. For material changes, we will provide additional notice within the App.
